Samsung Flex Hybrid: rollable folding display allows notebook origami

Samsung's display division presented a new OLED display for the first time at CES 2023, which can be folded on one side, while the visible size at the other end can be increased by rolling out the display.

At the CES in Las Vegas, Samsung wants to show, among other things, what possibilities can be realized through innovations in its division for the development and production of OLED displays for future end devices.

As an example, a "Flex Hybrid" display is presented, which can be folded or rolled. Samsung sees this as the future of laptop designs.

It is envisaged that with the help of the new type of folding-roll display, hybrid devices can be developed that can be used in different ways.

If you open the display, a kind of tablet is created to consume videos, among other things. If keyboard entries are necessary, you can turn the device according to Samsung's will and place it on a surface, whereby one-half of the display is slightly angled and serves as a work area.

The remaining part of the screen could then display a virtual keyboard, although this half of the screen can also be "expanded" if necessary because a scrollable display is used. This allows for more space for things like a virtual trackpad.

When retracted, Samsung's Flex Hybrid OLED display measures 10.5 inches diagonally with an aspect ratio of 4:3.When extended, the diagonal grow to 12.4 inches, while the aspect ratio changes to 16:10.

Samsung is also showing its "Flex Slidable" display for notebooks publicly for the first time at CES 2023, after having presented the prototype for the first time at an Intel event in 2022.

The flexible OLED display has a maximum diagonal of 17.3 inches and is available in two variants. These differ in that one model can only be "unrolled" on one side, while the other model can be "unrolled" on both sides.
